Hi all,
As the topic suggests who do you guys consider (in your opinions)
really good newsreaders?

I reckon Steve Blanda from 2UE is about the best, and Rowan Barker from
2GB.

Up here in Brisbane Rod Tilley at 4BC has great personality, I heard a
guy on 4KQ named Joel Helms he's pretty good.

So what do you guys think, is there anyone you think deserves a mention?
Guess who, Don't sue.

Yes, Robyn would be the best FM newsreader in Brisbane on-air currently
- unfortunately not for too much longer as she's off in Sept to have a
baby.

I can't speak more highly in Brisbane radio terms of Sally Quayle as a
great newsreader. Excellent voice and a great communicator when it came
to presentation. She was the B105 b'fast newsreader late 90's/early
2000's. Was great that 973 was able to lure her out of motherhood to
fill in a couple of months ago. Top marks to 973 for that.

On AM, Walter Williams would probably be the best in Brisbane. Very
authoritative, yet easy going and suited to the Brisbane lifestyle.

I wonder what 'Guess who, Don't Sue' problem is with Jennifer Zemek -
you should be more kind.

In Sydney on AM, Rowan Barker is the best by far. A very conversational
but authoritative presentation. There's nothing wrong with Blanda, but
he just sounds a little too cold and not enough personality for my
liking.

Further south in Melbourne, 3AW have such a great line up of
newsreaders.

Great on-air voices can also be heard in the country with former 4BU
journo Michelle Price now at River949 Ipswich (not really country I
know). I also remember 91.9 Sea FM's 1st journo Rowan Allen sounding
great and doing a fantastic job the 4 years he was on the Sunny Coast.
I believe he's in Adelaide now?

What about some names from the past?

Some that come to mind, in no particular order:

James Dibble (ABC), John Chance (ABC), John Reid (ABC), Geoff McComas
(3DB),. Ian Neil (3KZ), Jim Archer (3AW), Len London (2UE), Terry Dear
(2GB), John Ford (3UZ). Many now, sadly, deceased.

Who would have been the first female newsreader? In my time (late
1960s/early 1970s) it was very much a male domain but by the time I did some
work at Radio Australia and the ABC in the 1980s there were several female
newsreaders; the one name I recall was June Barton but there were others.
Any recollections?

June Barton came to 3DB from Radio Australia where - at that time - all
the news copy had been checked for errors and perfectly typed and where
all the newsreaders are taught that you never deviate from the printed
script.

She arrived at 3DB to discover that the copy she was reading had been
typed by the journalists themselves and had the occasional - and then
some - typo in it. She sounded woeful on air until she learned that she
was allowed or, in fact, expected, to correct the errors she encountered
so that the news copy flowed.

Doesn't really matter whether someone's on a 'news' station or not.
John is good at what he does for Brisbane, I just wonder whether
perhaps that presentation style of news that he uses has passed or not?

Do a search by viewing this NG via Google. Pretty Sure Jim Angel lives
in the Sthn Highlands, sem-retired, works on the local community
station and Stan Zemanek calls him sometimes.

Hi all,
As the topic suggests who do you guys consider (in your opinions)

I think Ron Lock at 3GG deserves a mention.

Ron handles the newsroom and then presents an hour of current affairs
between 9am and 10pm.

For a station that mainly takes a network feed, Ron has the important
role of localising 3GG by getting a local perspective on the day's
news.

Then there's Doug Pollard, who presents The Rainbow Report
on Melbourne's Joy FM.

Given most stations are skewed to one key demographic or another, I
like the thinking that underpins Doug's approach to news presentation,
which is:

'providing our own unique view of the world, through a wide-angle lens'

Yes of course Jim Angel! Who could forget his style? Were there any others
who sounded anything like Jim?

Another reader at 2SM in the early 1970s was Colin Bridge who had a great
voice.

One newsreader I recall on the ABC in Melbourne was a guy called Ian Blakie
who, one night in 1969, in the Victorian news at 2210, attempted to read a
report of the inquest into the fatal collision between the Southern Aurora
(express train) and another train. Ian was never heard on air again. I once
had a tape of that memorable newscast but unfortunately it was mislaid. It
may have been the Australian equivalent of the "live" description of the
Spit Head naval review on the BBC in the 1930s?

There must be many other stories of "memorable" newscasts?

I believe Mr Blakie may have had a longer than usual dinner at the local

I still have a copy of that tape ... somewhere. (I've added that to my
"to do" list - find it and shuttle it through, just to repack it on the
reel, if nothing else.)

It sure is, turnover news/programs is pretty low at ARN Brisbane

good thing.
